This interactive session brings together voices from around the globe to uncover how internet regulations marketed as “safety measures” have led to political censorship and restricted free speech. Participants will hear firsthand stories of how these laws have been misused, from the EU’s sweeping Digital Services Act, used to fine various social media companies, and Brazil’s use of controversial anti-misinformation policies to ban X. Moderated by Stephen Kent, this panel will focus on how these policies impact freedom of speech, and how well-intentioned internet regulations give the government new and unprecedented powers.
